태양은 지금 자신의 11년 활동주기 중 가장 조용한 단계인 태양 극소기(solar minimum) 단계이다.
사실 올해 태양은 너무나도 드물게 고요한 상태를 지키고 있다. 여태까지 200일 이상 흑점도 관측
할 수 없었다. 태양풍도 50년만에 최저 수준으로 떨어졌다. 과학자들은 이 매우 희귀한 정적이 가진
의미를 불안해하며 믿을 수 없어 하지만, 계속해서 가장 근접한 위성으로 모니터링 하고 있다.
